CMS Web Development

As usage of the internet increases so too does the need for updating and adding to your website. Businesses of all types and sizes need the ability to edit their own websites and so content management systems (CMSs) have become very popular. A CMS simplifies the process of publishing and managing website content using a web based interface that does not require technical knowledge of any web programming language.

Setup

This is the installation of the CMS, configuring it to suit your website and business and inserting the content.

Template Design

CMSs use templates or themes to define the appearance and layout of a website. There are many templates and themes that you can choose from but if you want a 100% unique website you can have a template designed. Of course customizing an existing template is also possible.

Extension Development

CMSs are built in such a way that it is easy to add functionality. This is done by building an extension, also commonly called plugins and modules.

Joomla

Joomla is an award-winning content management system (CMS), which enables you to build Web sites and powerful online applications. Many aspects, including its ease-of-use and extensibility, have made Joomla the most popular Web site software available. Joomla is used all over the world to power Web sites of all shapes and sizes. For example:

  • Corporate Web sites or portals
  • Corporate intranets and extranets
  • Online magazines, newspapers, and publications
  • E-commerce and online reservations
  • Government applications
  • Small business Web sites
  • Non-profit and organizational Web sites
  • Community-based portals
  • School and church Web sites
  • Personal or family homepages

WordPress

WordPress is completely customizable CMS and can be used for almost anything. It started as blogging software but has evolved into complete CMS used by millions of sites.

Joomla 1.6 has just been released. This makes it necessary for me to decide whether to use the new version for new sites or to carry on using Joomla 1.5. Joomla 1.6 is said to be even more powerful and still as user-friendly as before.

The new features did not sound all that exciting after reading up on them, however there are some useful improvements such as nested catagories, a new access control system, easier SEO functionality, better language support and some other stuff that I don't know much about. To find out more about the new features check the Joomla 1.6 site or the What's new in Joomla 1.6 documentation.

That's all very nice but there are still some problems with using Joomla 1.6. The main one being that most of the existing extensions and templates will need to be adapted to work in Joomla 1.6. It will take some time for developers to update their extensions. So if you want to be able to use the majority of existing extensions you need to use Joomla 1.5. Another reason to wait before switching to 1.6 is that there are still bugs in the new system and the upcomming version of Joomla 1.6 which will be released 6 months later is meant to have fixed most of those bugs.

I thought it would be nice to start a blog here so that I can publish useful info related to web design and also news updates in that field.
